Gerard Cosmetics Lipsticks - 1995 & Berry Smoothie

17 February 2015

If you watch YouTube then you would have heard about Gerard Cosmetics, they're the creators of the famous 1995 lipstick which is said to be the exact shade Kylie Jenner wears. Now, I'm not one to get into the YouTube hype unless it's a product raved about a YouTuber I trust (hello Pixiwoo and Lisa E) but I decided to try out these lipsticks because everyone was raving about them, even those who weren't sponsored. So when these arrived in my mail box, I was excited to say the least, and had very high expectations. Did they rise up to meet them? Let's just say that I don't love them, but I don't hate them either.

First off, let me say that Gerard Cosmetics has amazing shipping. It took 6 days for my order to be on my doorstep which made me happy because who doesn't love fast shipping? I ordered two lipsticks— 1995 and Berry Smoothie. 1995 is the lipstick created by Jaclyn Hill and is supposed to look like the exact shade that Kylie Jenner uses, and Berry Smoothie is a rose pink shade that is a brand new edition to their collection. Both lipsticks remind me of MAC lipsticks in the way the bullet is shaped, but I find Gerard Cosmetics lipsticks look much prettier. The packaging is sturdy and you also get a good amount of lipstick in the tube, but be weary because I found a lot of people complaining about how the packaging was very cheap. Now, usually these lipsticks are priced at $19, but I had a coupon code for 50% off my entire order, so I got these for $9 each.

1995 // Considering it's my birth year, I was naturally drawn to this lipstick, also I'm a fan of the shade Kylie Jenner uses, even though I'm not a fan of her at all (can kids find a better role model please?). The shade Kylie uses is Velvet Teddy by MAC, which is a mauve pink shade. I'm going to say straight off the bat, this lipstick doesn't look anything like Kylie Jenners lipstick. As soon as I applied this I loved how the finish was matte, and how it felt very comfortable on my lips, but I was disappointed at the fact that this doesn't resemble Velvet Teddy at all. This is a lipstick that looks different on everyone, but regardless it's a very red toned nude, almost leaning on the brown side. While the shade is beautiful, it just didn't live up to its promise. Also, can we talk about the scent!? It smells heavily of lime and citrus, which I'm not a fan of at all, so I always have to bear the scent when I'm applying this. The application for this lipstick is generally quite good, it doesn't apply patchy and goes on smooth, but I do find that I need to apply two layers of this to get it as intense as my liking.

When it comes to the longevity of this lipstick, it isn't too great, as I had to reapply within the hour. While it's a gorgeous colour, and the formulation feels nice and comfortable on the lips, I was disappointed as this was marketed as a dupe for the shade Kylie wears, and it definitely was not that. If you're looking for a red toned nude though, then you will enjoy this as it's a very universal colour and will look flattering on anyone, regardless of skin tone. Try finding a coupon (YouTube is filled with coupons, trust me), and you can get this lipstick for much cheaper if you are contemplating on whether or not you want to purchase this.

Berry Smoothie // My favourite of the two. Berry Smoothie is exactly how you would imagine it, a muted pink, and while I have many pink lipsticks in my collection, nothing is quite like this one. Unlike 1995, this is a satin finish, so it has added gloss and moisture. The opacity is great as I find that I only have to apply one layer to get the full intensity of this product, and it isn't drying either. Another great thing I found, is that it doesn't have that dreaded citrus scent, which I'm guessing is because it's part of the newer range and Gerard listened to their customers about the scent, so they didn't incorporate it in this lipstick. I actually find this a better dupe for the Kylie Jenner lip colour if you are on the hunt, as it's much more rosy than 1995. Unfortunately, the longevity of this lipstick is sub par, as I found I needed to reapply after an hour, but to be honest, I didn't mind too much as the colour is flattering and unlike anything I have. This lipstick didn't accentuate any dryness on my lips and didn't shrivel them into a prune which is a miracle.

One thing I would have hoped for, is for this lipstick to leave a nice stain on my lips once it has come off, but instead, my lips were completely bare. If you're looking for a nice, everyday pink lipstick then this is a fantastic option. It goes with everything, and it doesn't matter what skin tone you have, this is a universally flattering shade and will look great on everyone.

L-R: 1995, Berry Smoothie
While Gerard Cosmetics didn't completely live up to it's promises, they still have some great shades to choose from. Overall, if you're on the hunt for a Kylie lip colour, then skip 1995 and instead check out Berry Smoothie.

P.S. Is anyone watching the Cricket World Cup? If you don't already know, I'm a huge fan of cricket (go Pakistan!), so I would love to know if any of my readers love it as much as I do! Let me know!

Have you tried Gerard Cosmetics? What do you think of them?

  2. I was also surprised at how different 1995 looked on my compared to what I expected, also not impressed with the wear time - as you say, ok lipsticks but I don't know if I would buy more shades.

    1. Completely agree! I'm pretty sure I won't be repurchasing as the wear time isn't anything to rave about. 1995 was such a disappointment for me unfortunately :(

  3. There is a lot of hype around these (and their glosses), but to be honest I'm not that keen! They really don't sound amazing when you get down to the nitty gritty. I'm glad you're enjoying Berry Smoothie though :)

    1. Yes! I found that mostly YouTubers rave about these (because they're being paid to), but I thought I'd try it out anyways. Thankfully Berry Smoothie is a nice shade and something I wear very often! x

  5. Going to go OT in this post (sorry to everyone) & say yes I am following the Cricket World Cup as well! Fairly big cricket fan myself - I come from a family of cricket lovers, so I suppose it had to rub off on me eventually. Naturally I am supporting Australia, but I may end up following Ireland as well after their match/win against the West Indies the other day.

    1. Yay! I'm so glad I found another cricket fan, most of the people I know aren't fans of cricket so this comment really excited me haha. Australia is definitely who I'm rooting for after Pakistan (simply because I'm Pakistani), but Ireland is really stepping up their game!
